A Study on the Concentration of Heavy Metals in the Tributaries of Han River

Abstract
For the purpose of clarifying the states of the pollution to the six kinds of heavy metals to the seven main tributaries of the Han River, the concentrations of the heavy metals were measured once a month by site at the ten sites in the tributaries during 12 months from October in 1975 to November in 1976. The results are as follows.
1) The streams in which Pb concentration exceed the WHO water quality standard 0.1mg/§¤, are Chungge stream and Anyang stream, and the excess occurrences are 3 times and 5 times respectively the maximum concentrations of the measured values is 0.130 mg/§¤ in the Chungge stream and 0.506mg/§¤ in the Anyang stream.
2) The streams in which Cd concentration exceed the American public water quality standard 0.01mg/§¤ are Chungge stream, Anyang stream and Ouk stream, and the excess occurrences are 2 times, 4 times and 1 time respectively. The maximum concentration of the measured values by each tributary is 0.012mg/§¤, 0.014mg/§¤ and 0.015 mg/§¤.
3) Generally, the upper in the stream, the higher is the concentration of the heavy metals. In the case of Cu metal in Jungryang stream, the concentration of Cu metal in the lower stream is 0.018mg/§¤ twice the concentration of the middle stream, 0.009mg/§¤ at the same observed date.
In the case of Cr metal, its concentration in middle stream of Anyang stream is 0.022mg/§¤ and in the lower stream 0.05mg/§¤, which is 2.3 times the amount of the middle stream.
4) In the Jungryang stream, the concentration of the pollution by Cr, Fe and Zn metals is higher than in any other streams and the monthly average concentration is 0.1112mg/§¤, 1.267mg/§¤ and 0.401mg/§¤ respectively. It is considered as facts resulting from 882 industrial plants in the drainage of this stream, as 23.3% of the total 3632 in Seoul.
5) In the Chungge stream, the monthly average concentration of Cu metal is 0.087mg/§¤, shows the relatively high concentration. This result is referred to the plating factories in small size, the metal factories, and the dying factories in the drainage area of this stream.
6) The drainage area of the Anyang stream contains 1235 industrial plants as 34% of the total industrial plants such as the refining factories, the metal factories and the chemical factories. So this stream is likely more polluted by Pb and Cd metal than the other and the concentration of Pb and Cd metal is 0.156mg/§¤ and 0.009mg/§¤ respectively.
7) In the Ouk stream, Sadang stream, Sungne stream and Bulkwang stream, concentration of the heavy metals are relatively low. This result is referred to the fact that the number of industrial plants in each drainage is less than 5% of the total industrial plants in the Seoul area.
8) In the main tributaries of the Han River in the Seoul area, the other of the stream more polluted by heavy metals is revealed as Anyang stream, Chungge stream, Jungryang stream, Ouk stream, Sungnae stream, Bulkwang stream and Sadang stream.
